Marseilles' and the region's newspapers

By Etienne D.

Marseilles has many local newspapers. In the city and the PACA region, the regional press is really dynamic and inventive. Provencal people are very interested by their local newspapers and used to read them. Here is a presentation of some of them.

Main newspapers

The main regional newspaper in Marseille is "La Provence", which also covers the « départments » of « Vaucluse » and the « Alpes de Haute Provence ». This daily newspaper was born after the fusion between Le Provençal and Le Méridional in 1997.

200 journalists work there, and 160,000 copies are printed each day. It is the most known regional newspaper in France; and in Provence, Alps, Côte-d'Azur region (PACA) it is definitely the most read and the most popular newspaper.

Each day, local events and national or international facts are described. La Provence shows the identity of the inhabitants of Marseille : there are sports articles that mainly present football (and the Olympic of Marseilles).

All around PACA, La Provence has 14 different editions.

La Marseillaise is less important than La Provence. But, it is a freer newspaper (and more politically oriented, because he was founded by a Resistance movement after World War II).

It publishes editions through all the region. The newspaper organizes annually, every first weekend of July, the largest « pétanque » competition in the world, the world tournament of pétanque. Nearly 12,000 players participate each year.

The first official publication took place in august 1944.

Other newspapers

L'Hebdo is a weekly newspaper. It belongs to Hersant Media, a big press group, which also publishes La Provence and Marseille Plus. Each week, it speaks about the latest news, current events in detail. There are cultural and sports topics too. It has existed since december 2001.

Le Ravi is a journal which is a bit special. In fact, it's a satirical newspaper. Each month, topics like democracy, racism, or scandals are discussed. By the way, the pages are covered by a lot of ironic and funny comic strips. Le Ravi is particular, because it's the only french regional paper of this kind. About 5,000 copies are sold per publication. Its first publication was in 2003.

Free Newspapers

Marseille Plus (or now Direct Marseille) also belongs to Hersant Media's group. Its particularity is the fact that it is a totally free newspapers, which lives through advertising. It was the first local paper working like this. 65,000 copies of Direct Marseille (Plus) are printed and distributed each morning. It competes with two other free daily newspapers : Metro and 20 minutes. All these newspapers are mainly available in subway stations. In a certain way, Direct Marseille is the Provence's little brother, a free (but less complete) version. It has been published since February 2002.
