EUROMEDITERRANEE

« Euroméditerrannée » is a project of economic, social and cultural development, in Marseille.

First, it aims to build a business district in La Joliette, a district of Marseille. The project was launched in 1995 by the State and the former Mayor of Marseille: Robert Vigouroux. The project is financed by the European Union, the State, the Regional council, the General Council, the urban community and the city of Marseille.

3 developing zones (Joliette, Saint Charles and « Cité de la Méditerranée »), which lead the Euroméditerranée » project will help to ensure a significant urban transformation in these sectors .

Euroméditerranée is aquiring grounds, arranging public places and establishing the program of the building. Grounds are given up to property developpers on the basis of a programme and architectural specifications.

The project allows several renovations and buildings :

The change of the Docks, former warehouses, into offices. This real estate set welcomes 220 companies employing 3 500 persons: head offices, regional offices, restaurants, services...
The tranformation of the Grain Silo into a theatre: very practical for the project " Marseille Provence 2013 "
The renovation of the «  rue République » : new stores, renovation of the pavement
The construction of the tower CMA-CGM which welcomes numerous offices, and thus offers a lot of jobs.
The budget of the operation amounts to 7 billion euros of investments including  5 billion of private investments.
The project plans large number of constructions, renovations, rehabilitations and plans for housing, work, transportation and culture …
The welcome of 10 000 new inhabitants in the district
600 000 m2 of offices in the international standards to favor the setting-up of banks, insurance companies and companies of international trade : CMA-CGM is the 3rd world shipping line.

There will be other skyscrapers like the tower SAS Sweden, a set of residential really high buildings, and of offices which will reach 135 m.
400 000 m2 of housing and the rehabilitation of 6 000 dilapidated and unhealthy houses.

A plan of construction and renovation of the former schools and the realization of day-nurseries
A plan for jobs and the creation of activities for the local residents whose unemployment rate is one of the highest of Marseilles (20% in 2006, exceed 30% in 2000 !).

 A cultural and intellectual development plan thanks to the creation of cultural facilities with for example, the Museum of the civilizations of Europe and the Méditerranean sea, a complex for congresses and exhibitions, businesses and restaurants, a multiplex of 16 rooms.

- The former Factory of Tobaccos of the « Belle de Mai » was completely rehabilitated to welcome the projects of shows of television and of artists...
- The reorganization of the infrastructures of transit.
- A new maritime station inaugurated in September 2005 which will allow the port to be a big port in Europe

Since the launching of Euroméditerranée, 800 companies settled in Marseille (half from foreign countries) and more than 18 500 jobs were created to contribute to lower the unemployment rate in the city center.
